This video is especially helpful if you are new to backpacking and are looking for guidance on what gear is worth spending your money on. About This Video

Most people who are getting into backpacking end up at REI, so I decided to do the obvious thing: grab a full kit made up of REI’s best-selling backpacking gear and take it on a real trip. Not a backyard “review,” but a rugged section out in Arizona where you actually find out what’s legit, what’s just popular, and what might be overpriced hype. I hiked through a desert that was unusually alive—lush grass, blooming flowers, wet mornings—and used that as the perfect stress test for comfort, carry, and real-world usability. On the gear side, I put the Osprey Atmos AG pack back on after years of ultralight packs and remembered what a real suspension system feels like—structured, comfortable, and easy to organize, even if it’s nearly five pounds. At camp I ran the Big Agnes Copper Spur (awesome space and livability, but it sags hard when wet), slept on the Nemo Tensor Allseason (great warmth-to-weight, not my favorite baffle feel), and used my Nemo Riff bag (a backpacking-leaning upgrade over the Disco). I also hit the classics: Jetboil convenience vs value, the Black Diamond Spot’s AAA-battery annoyance, Helinox Chair Zero comfort (with the sinking-in-the-dirt downside), and the Grayl Geopress as a bulky-but-solid purifier—especially for international travel.
