We got up before dawn and hopped on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara, and I’m telling you—this ride was totally worth it. We booked business class (same price as coach for us at $25) and loved the big, comfy seats, outlets, tray tables, and the free bottled water and coffee. The best part was the coastline: we were closer to the ocean than the 101, saw dolphins and surfers, and didn’t have to stress about driving at all. If you’re visiting California’s Central Coast, this is an easy, relaxing day-trip idea. Once we arrived, we went straight to Chad’s Cafe for brunch, and it was a 10 out of 10. The complimentary mini chocolate chip muffins were amazing, the mimosa flight was adorable (and delicious), and I went full eggs benedict connoisseur mode—the Canadian bacon was seriously thick. Then we met up with Pepper and headed to the Santa Barbara Zoo, where feeding the giraffes (Remy and Theo) was the highlight—just don’t cross the white line and don’t try to pet them. After the zoo, we parked right on Stearns Wharf (first 90 minutes free), ate lunch at Moby Dick’s with ocean views, shopped for our magnet and ornament, and then did the LandShark amphibious tour—yes, the bus drives straight into the harbor. We wrapped the day at the Santa Barbara Bowl for a Darius Rucker concert, which is an incredible way to cap off Santa Barbara.
