About This Video

Embarkation day can feel hectic (and honestly a little scary) when it’s your first cruise—our first one, we had no idea what to expect. In this video, we walk you through the whole process so you can show up confident instead of overwhelmed. We start with what to do before you even get to the port: complete your cruise line’s online check-in, pick your arrival time if your line offers it, and get your travel documents organized. We also recommend printing your cruise tags ahead of time and using tag holders so your tags don’t get ripped off and your luggage doesn’t get delayed. Once you arrive at the terminal, we break down the step-by-step flow: drop checked bags with the porter (and bring a couple dollars per bag to tip), go through airport-style security, then check in and put a credit or debit card on file (don’t be surprised by a temporary hold like a hotel). After that, you’ll get your cruise card—Pepper calls it his “magic card”—and then it’s time to board, explore the ship, use the app for schedules and reservations, and complete your muster drill. From there, it’s all about setting yourself up to relax: book any remaining dining or entertainment right away, enjoy lunch (we like the main dining room instead of the crowded buffet), check your cabin when it’s ready, and don’t miss sail away. And our biggest reminders: cruising is a marathon, not a sprint—pace the drinks and don’t get sunburned on day one.
