In this video I’m sitting down to talk about Marlen fountain pens—an Italian brand that really leans into the idea that a pen can tell a story. Marlen was founded in 1982 in Sant’Arpino (outside of Naples) by Mario and Antonio Esposito, and the name itself is a nod to Marlene Dietrich (they were fans). I share a little bit of that background first, because it sets the tone for why these pens feel so theme-driven and collectible. Then I walk you through nine different Marlen models, each inspired by history, art, or iconic places: Pastrengo (the 1848 battle), Maya-Tikal, Moai, Cheope, San Pietro, The Harmony of Leonardo, Egizia in Orange, the Maita division pen dedicated to Cristoforo Colombo, and the Marlen Ten collaboration with Dr. Guido Staltari. I also include writing samples for four of the pens so you can see how they actually put ink on paper—not just how they photograph.
