About This Video

Water is one of nature’s most beautiful and complex elements—and in CGI it’s still one of the most elusive challenges. In this video, I break down how realistic water is actually “built” in films and games, and why the approaches are totally different. We look at Avatar: The Way of Water and how Weta Digital pushed particle-based fluid simulation to the extreme (down to droplets, bubbles, and splashes) with a specialized framework, and why some shots took days just to simulate—before you even hit render. Then I switch to games, where you don’t get weeks per shot—you need real-time performance. I explain how titles like Sea of Thieves use Gerstner waves and shader tricks (including moving wave computations into vertex shaders) to keep water feeling alive at high FPS, and how games like Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Assassin’s Creed handle interactions, reflections, and ripples. The big takeaway: realism isn’t just “fluid sim.” It’s the combo of shaders, caustics, particles, lighting, and smart fakes—used intentionally to support the story. And if you want to start doing this in Blender, I also point you to solid tutorials for underwater scenes, fake caustics, and full water workflows.
