In this video I’m tackling a take that makes people do a double take: Blender is not free. Yeah, you can download it for $0, but the only reason you can do that is because other people are paying—individual donors and corporate sponsors keeping the Blender Foundation funded. I walk through Blender’s story from Ton’s early 1994 files, to the 2002 crowdfunding moment that saved it, to the massive turning point of Blender 2.8 in 2019 that made the industry take it seriously. Then I get into the uncomfortable part: what happens if funding slows down. Blender wouldn’t “disappear” because it’s open source, but the pace of development absolutely would. Paid devs and grants are what push big features forward and keep bugs getting fixed, and without that, the first things you’d feel are cancelled features, slower updates, and scaled-back community efforts like events and resources. The wild stat is this: out of millions of active users, only about 10,200 people donated in 2023—less than 0.05%. My takeaway is simple: if Blender helped you level up, even a small donation (or just spreading the word) is how we keep Blender growing into a real industry force—Vulkan, Grease Pencil, and everything coming next.
