About This Video

In this video I answer a question I get a lot: “Have you ever thought about adding a mall to my LEGO City?” The short answer is yes—I’ve definitely thought about it. But the long answer is why I still don’t have one, and it really comes down to how my city is built and what I like to prioritize when I’m designing layouts. First, it’s a straight-up space issue. When I look over my LEGO City, there’s basically no empty spot—no open baseplates, no real construction zones unless I force one into the street. The only areas I could even consider are a small sliver that’s currently a park, and the federal building plaza area that I intentionally left open. I could tear down the park like any real city would, but right now the city is packed. Second, malls are tough in LEGO because most of the cool stuff is inside, and my city is all about what you can see from the outside. My buildings aren’t dollhouse-style with open backs, so exterior detail and street-level storytelling matter most. The closest thing I have to a “mall vibe” is Bricks Tower with multiple businesses, but even that isn’t a true mall—and that’s kind of the point.
