In this episode of Minibuild Monday, I’m throwing it way back with a classic LEGO Creator 3-in-1 set that comes in one of those super cool plastic containers. This one is set 4916, “Mini Animals,” and honestly these tubs feel like the polybags before polybags were even a thing. I picked my copy up used, so the seal was already cut, and when I popped the lid and dumped it out, the pieces were even sorted into a little ziplock bag—love that. I also got hit with a big nostalgia wave seeing the old brown pieces in there, plus a couple palm leaves. I build up the monkey model and go over what you can do with it. The little palm-leaf “bush” is hilarious (it’s basically three pieces), but the monkey itself has some surprisingly fun articulation—poseable legs and feet, arms that move around, a tail, and a head that spins to some wild angles. I’ll be real: while I was building it, I wasn’t seeing the vision, especially with the head and face, but once it’s together it starts to make more sense (even if the face still looks pretty funny). My biggest takeaway is how these older Creator 3-in-1 sets leaned hard into basic bricks, which made them way more rebuild-friendly than a lot of today’s super-specific builds.
