I decided to roll the dice on “The Video Game Company,” a site that claims it’s a reputable, graded source for nostalgic consoles. So I bought a stack of retro hardware and a game for each one to see if the condition ratings actually mean anything in the real world. On paper, it sounds great: reasonable return policy, clear condition tiers, and the promise of “everything you need” in the box. In practice…yeah, it’s been a little more chaotic than that. Some stuff genuinely impressed me. The Play It Loud Game Boy and the minty Tetris were solid overall (even if the Game Boy literally had missing screws rattling around inside). The “fair” Crystal Xbox looked decent and the disc drive worked, but it showed up missing key cables and the included controller didn’t work. The Vita looked clean and even had a memory card left inside, but it came with the wrong charger and was passcode locked—so it was basically a very expensive paperweight. The NES was the surprise win: it powered on first try, came with the right stuff, and just worked. Overall, it’s not the worst refurb experience I’ve seen, but the constant quality control misses and the weak warranty make it hard to justify over just buying from eBay or elsewhere—especially when they didn’t even reply to my support email after five days.
