About This Video

In this video I talk about what software engineering is starting to look like now, and where I think it’s heading by 2030. Back in 2020, “learn to code” was basically the default advice for anyone wanting a stable career change (I literally Googled the best options and SWE kept coming up). And to be fair, becoming a software engineer has been the best career decision I’ve ever made — it let me travel, build a ton of apps, and I’ve even got a mobile app about to be used by the UK government. But if I was starting from scratch in 2025, I honestly don’t think I’d aim for a traditional junior SWE job. The market is rough: oversaturation from years of bootcamps, tech over-hiring during low interest rates, and AI making engineers way more efficient (which hits junior roles hardest). My main takeaway is that coding hasn’t become less valuable — it’s become higher leverage. The biggest opportunity is to “make your own job” by building and shipping your own app or SaaS, because best case you create real income, and worst case you build a portfolio project that makes you way more employable. I also break down the two skills that matter most: (1) building/deploying the product and (2) marketing it. That’s why I’m putting together Build Apps Fast — a no-BS path to ship something real, faster, using AI where it makes sense.
