In this video I’m walking you through our exact 10-day Guatemala itinerary with kids—Lake Atitlan, Antigua, and Tikal/Flores—plus where we stayed and what I’d do again (and what I’d do differently). We started with a brutal, “cheapest flights possible” travel day and a 3-hour drive to Lake Atitlan with our private driver Carlos (truly the best—he even knew the perfect snack/ATM stops). Getting to our Lake Atitlan Airbnb required a speedboat at dusk, which honestly felt a little sketchy at first, but waking up to the volcano views at Casa Paloma completely changed the vibe. At Lake Atitlan, I share how to use the public lancha boats (and why you should pack motion sickness meds), our favorite villages like San Juan La Laguna, and a fun family outing to Atitlan Nature Reserve for ziplining, butterflies, and monkeys. Then we moved to Antigua for cobblestone streets, amazing food (including sourdough pizza), and our big adventure: hiking Pacaya Volcano with a private guide, where we roasted marshmallows over volcanic steam (yes, that’s the kid bribe that worked). We finished in Flores at Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel—luxury jungle cabins, incredible service, and a private sunset tour of Tikal with wildlife, Mayan stories the kids could understand, and a sunset from the top of a pyramid. I also share why I consider Guatemala an “intermediate” family trip and who I think it’s best for (elementary kids and up).
