I’m at the Cloud Microphones booth at NAMM 2023 with Dave, and we’re doing a quick look at their newest box: the Cloudlifter X. At first glance it looks a lot like the award-winning Cloudlifter CL-1, but it’s a little bigger and it’s not here to “replace” the CL-1—this is meant to live alongside it. The whole idea is the same core use case: direct-coupling with your preamp to turn a passive dynamic or ribbon mic into something that behaves more like an active mic, with clean, usable gain. Where the Cloudlifter X gets interesting is flexibility and vibe. You get two extra gain levels from a side switch: a lower setting around 12 dB (perfect when 26 dB is just overkill—think SM57 on snare), and a higher mode that goes beyond the CL-1, up to about 36 dB for super quiet sources like podcasting, ASMR, delicate percussion, and “exotic” low-level stuff. The other big change is internal: Cloud worked with CineMag on a custom nickel-core transformer that’s always active. Unlike the CL-1’s super-stable “same in, same out” behavior, the X can add a little saturation and harmonic content when you lean into it—basically, if you hit it hard, it kisses you back.
