About This Video

In this video, it’s me—Zion The Messenger—building that Sizzla / Xterminator reggae style drum foundation from scratch. I’m working in Ableton Live Lite and the main goal is to capture that uniqueness in drum tone and playing style that those classic productions had. Before I even start placing notes, I talk about having a clear idea of the reggae lane you’re aiming for, because reggae is a big genre with plenty styles. For this one, I’m going for that old-school, experimental vibe with a heavy, heavy swing. I start by auditioning kits, then I shape the sound by transposing the rim shot instead of swapping samples—small moves like that make a big difference when you’re chasing a specific feel. Tempo is set at 78, I build the hi-hats, then I push them off the grid to create that deep swing (because on-the-grid is too straight). I also “humanize” with velocity changes and timing shifts so it doesn’t sound robotic, then I add reverb to the rim/snare to get a clearer picture of where the mix is heading. From there I add kick variations, adjust shaker/cowbell levels, and drop in an open hat so the whole drum groove feels authentic and alive.
