Trap Dancehall is a new sub genre of Dancehall which emerged in the popular music space in Jamaica and across the globe. This new sound features more melodic, hard hitting snares and heavy bass driven 'riddims' inspired by American Trap music.

About This Video

In this video I’m mixing a Trap Dancehall instrumental I just created—Vybz Kartel & Masicka type vibes—with that melodic but hard-hitting trap-driven riddim energy. I start my mix the way I like it: I pull everything down until I’m basically hearing the metronome, then I bring in the kick and hi-hats first. From there I route my drums into a drum bus in FL Studio, because I like to treat the drums as one thing. And yeah—no thumb rules—some people will say “don’t do it like that,” but I mix my beats into a limiter because I want that loudness window and that final polish as I’m balancing. After that I bring in the 808 and clean it up with filtering, then I sidechain the kick into the 808 using TDR Nova (free plugin). I even check the kick length in milliseconds and match the release so the pump feels musical and the kick can dominate like I want. I also shape the “heat” (that percussive/orchestral texture), widen it with delay, and lock my low end in mono using A1 Stereo Control so everything under about 250Hz stays centered. Then I widen the strings with aggressive panning, EQ out the rumble, and push melodies under the snare because I want space for upfront vocals. By the end, the beat is already sounding polished just from clean levels, smart width, and a solid foundation.
