About This Video

In this short, I compare two very different 48-inch refrigerators that happen to be almost the same price: Sub-Zero and Thermador. We’re showing Thermador in stainless, but it’s really an integrated refrigerator—meaning if you panel it, it can disappear into your cabinetry and won’t stick out. Sub-Zero can be panelized too, but in counter-depth you’ll see the sides, so that’s something to remember if you’re comparing the look in a high-end kitchen. For usability and food preservation, I lean Sub-Zero. I like the French door design with the compressor on top because you don’t have to reach as high as you do with bottom-compressor integrated designs (I’m 5'8", and you really feel it). Sub-Zero also has features like nanotechnology glass that congeals spills, split climate control for different airflow and temps (even in the crisper), plus a vacuum seal and magnetic crisper bins to keep air out. Thermador’s stainless interior holds cold a bit better and it offers two ice types—including diamond ice for cocktails—plus a convertible drawer you can swap between fridge and freezer. Bottom line: pick Sub-Zero for preservation, Thermador for panel-ready looks and specialty ice.
