However, we often see homeowners finish their dream renovations only to realize something feels "off." Usually, this is the result of one of six common design errors. In this video, we draw on our experience to highlight these mistakes and provide practical solutions to ensure your kitchen works as well as it looks. Key Kitchen Design Mistakes & Solutions: Microwaves with Trim Kits: Using a metal trim kit to make a countertop microwave look built-in can instantly date a kitchen. Pros of Alternatives: Using a dedicated built-in microwave or a speed oven provides a much cleaner, integrated high-end look that matches your other appliances. Cons: These specialized units may have a higher initial cost than a standard microwave plus a trim kit. Inadequate Ventilation: Many homeowners choose vent hoods based on aesthetics rather than performance. Shallow hoods or downdrafts often fail to capture smoke and grease from the front burners. The Fix: We recommend a hood at least 23 inches deep with appropriate CFM. A practical alternative is installing a powerful blower inside a custom wood or tile enclosure for better performance at a lower cost. Poor Kitchen Layout: Starting a design with large appliances rather than the workflow can lead to a kitchen that is frustrating to use. The Fix: Start with the sink as your anchor, as you spend the most time there. Build zones (cooktop, dishwasher, and fridge) around it to avoid "zigzagging" across the space. Overwhelming Color Choices: While bold colors like blues, reds, and brass accents look great in showrooms, they can become visually exhausting over time. Cons: Excessive color can negatively impact resale value if it doesn't align with a future buyer's taste. The Fix: Use color as an accent (e.g., just the range or hood) and keep other elements neutral or panel-ready to maintain a "wow" factor without the visual fatigue. Skipping Panel-Ready Appliances: Leaving dishwashers or under-counter fridges in stainless steel can break up the visual flow of high-end cabinetry. Pros of Panels: They allow appliances to blend seamlessly, making the space feel more custom and upscale. Incomplete Lighting Layers: Relying solely on island pendants is a major oversight. The Fix: You need layers. We suggest recessed task lighting (2,700–3,000K), under-cabinet lighting for visibility, and toe-kick or up-lighting for ambiance. Dimmers and separate switches are essential for controlling the environment.
