Download our FREE Appliance Buying Guide: https://blog.yaleappliance.com/free-appliance-buying-guide --------- Must Have Appliance Features vs Those You Can Skip Every year, appliance brands introduce new features—air fry modes, Wi-Fi connectivity, extra wash cycles, internal refrigerator cameras—all promising to make life easier. In this video, I break down which appliance features are truly useful and which ones you can skip. I walk through the most talked-about upgrades across ranges, refrigerators, dishwashers, and laundry, sharing the practical pros and limitations of each so you can decide what actually adds value in your home. Range Features: What Works and What Doesn’t I explain why full-size oven air fry settings often don’t perform like countertop models. Large oven cavities can struggle to deliver the concentrated airflow needed for consistent results. On the other hand, convection is a feature many people underuse. With proper fan circulation and convection conversion settings, you can achieve more even baking across multiple racks. For higher-end ranges, I discuss steam assist (offered by brands like Miele and SKS). It’s not a full steam oven, but it adds moisture during roasting for improved texture and better results with meats and bread. I also compare guided cooking programs from brands such as Miele, SKS, JennAir, and Wolf—helpful for reducing guesswork, though steam assist is not included on all models. Refrigerator Features: Smart vs Practical Some refrigerators from Samsung, SKS, and Thermador now include internal cameras so you can view contents remotely. While this sounds convenient, I explain why it may not meaningfully change how you shop or manage food. Wi-Fi alerts, however, can be useful—especially for open-door notifications or filter replacement reminders. Other features that may offer real benefits include: Convertible drawers that switch between refrigerator and freezer modes (available on select Samsung, LG, and GE models) Larger specialty ice formats like Craft Ice Increased interior capacity without extending beyond cabinetry, such as LG’s larger capacity designs Spill-containing shelving like Sub-Zero’s nanotechnology glass I also discuss an often overlooked factor: serviceability. Access to reliable local repair is more important long term than app features or interior cameras. Dishwasher Features: Where the Differences Matter I explain why ultra-low decibel ratings below 44 dBA may not justify added cost in most kitchens. Many premium dishwashers, including Bosch Benchmark and Miele G7000 models, offer 15–17 cycles. However, most households regularly use only a few core settings. Where higher-end dishwashers stand out is in drying systems and detergent management: Auto-open doors at the end of a cycle improve drying performance Miele’s condensation drying pulls in cool air to reduce moisture Bosch’s CrystalDry uses volcanic materials to enhance plastic drying Auto-dispense detergent systems store detergent for multiple loads and release precise amounts These practical automation features can have more impact than additional wash cycles. Laundry Features: More Cycles vs Smarter Function Some Samsung washer/dryer combinations offer 23 cycles and 32 options, while GE and LG models may offer even more. While specialty cycles can be helpful, most people rely on just a few core settings. I explain why automatic detergent dispensers are often more beneficial than added cycles. These systems: Prevent over-pouring in front-load washers Store detergent for 18–40 loads depending on the model Improve cleaning consistency and reduce residue buildup Like dishwashers, the smaller automation features often provide more day-to-day value than expanded cycle counts. Appliance Apps: A Look at What’s Possible At the end, I highlight a coffee system app that allows detailed customization—temperature, strength, milk percentage, and drink selection. It demonstrates how appliance apps can be useful when thoughtfully designed. --------- Interested in learning more?
