I live in the woods with bobcats, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and skunks. Free ranging isn’t possible, so I built a predator-proof chicken tractor and paired it with a separate raised coop to keep hens safe while still giving them fresh ground, bugs, and greens. In this video I show the full setup: sizing a lightweight tractor, separating the coop and “play room,” laying 1/2 inch hardware cloth under and around the run, adding a 90 degree skirt, using bricks to stop birds from digging out, and a simple raccoon-proof door bar. I also cover my winter kit with a heated waterer and a timed feeder. 00:00 Why free ranging chickens might not be possible 00:22 What predators eat backyard chickens 00:44 Why many can’t free range safely 01:06 What is a chicken tractor 01:28 Chicken tractor mistakes from my first build 01:50 How to size a chicken tractor for larger flocks 02:12 Chicken tractor docking to a separate coop 02:34 How to stop predators digging under a chicken coop 02:56 Hardware cloth skirt, bricks, and raccoon-proof door 03:18 Winter chicken setup: heated waterer and timed feeder 03:40 Predator-proof chicken tractor that works (results) #chickentractor #backyardchickens #predatorproof #chickencoop #hardwarecloth #wineberryhill
