Watch a video about the making of my geothermal greenhouse: https://youtu.be/J8rL71zWf_c I decided to pull out the old plumbing for the raised bed heating system (using compost) because I don't need it. The greenhouse stays plenty warm. During this process I decided to also harvest the sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes were the spark that led me to build it in the first place...was it worth? OVER 40lbs seems pretty great to me! Geothermal energy is a sustainable and renewable energy source that can be used for heating and cooling. I decided to build a geothermal greenhouse to grow my own fruits and vegetables year-round, even in cold Northeast winters. The greenhouse is made entirely from recycled materials, including windows and timber salvaged from construction sites and demolition projects. I designed the greenhouse to be as energy-efficient as possible, with double-glazed windows and a thick layer of insulation to trap heat inside. One of the ways I planned to heat the raised garden bed inside the greenhouse was by circulating water warmed by a nearby compost pile through pex tubing buried throughout the bed. However, I soon found that my greenhouse stayed so warm that I didn't need to set up the rest of the compost-powered garden bed heater. Despite not using the compost-powered garden bed heater, my greenhouse stays warm enough for my plants to thrive even in the coldest of winters. This is all thanks to the principles of geothermal energy and energy-efficient design. Now, let's move on to the sweet potato harvest. I grew sweet potatoes in the raised garden bed inside the greenhouse, and they thrived in the warm and humid environment. When it was time to harvest them, I decided to make it a fun and educational experience for my chickens. I brought my chickens into the greenhouse while I was cleaning out the sweet potatoes and vines from the bed. They enjoyed digging in the dirt and eating bugs in the soil while I worked. Chickens make excellent garden helpers, as they eat insects and till the soil. The sweet potato harvest was bountiful, and I was able to feed my family and share some with friends and neighbors. Growing your own food is not only rewarding, but it also promotes self-sufficiency and sustainability. In conclusion, building a geothermal greenhouse using recycled materials is an excellent way to grow your own food year-round while minimizing your environmental footprint. And involving your chickens in the sweet potato harvest is a fun and educational experience that promotes sustainable living. I hope you enjoyed this video and learned something new.
