Today, we’re unboxing two of the most extraordinary jazz releases ever made — the Verve Records Mastercut Editions of Ella & Louis and Getz/Gilberto. These aren’t your typical vinyl records — they’re direct-to-lacquer mastercuts, made straight from the original analog masters. That means no intermediate steps, no metal plating, and no stampers — just pure, unfiltered sound captured in its most fragile and authentic form. In this video, I’ll take you through the full unboxing — from the outer packaging to the stunning presentation inside each album. We’ll talk about what makes lacquer discs different from traditional vinyl, the pros and cons of owning them, and why collectors and mastering engineers consider these the ultimate playback experience. Both albums are pillars of jazz history — Ella & Louis (1956) defines vocal chemistry, while Getz/Gilberto (1964) introduced the world to “The Girl from Ipanema” and brought bossa nova to the mainstream. I’ll also share my plan to preserve and archive these lacquers through DSD128 transfers using the TASCAM DA-3000SD, ensuring their legacy lives on in high-resolution digital form.
