Over the years I’ve reviewed a bunch of kids microscopes, from small 250X units all the way up to 2500X, and in this video I put an upgraded 500X portable microscope to the test. The big difference with this one is it records video and takes pictures natively—no messing around with trying to line up a phone to the eyepiece. I show how the controls work (tap for photo, hold for 3 seconds to record), and I run it on real stuff like a stick, a dime, strands of hair, plants, and even a spider when we can keep it still long enough. What surprised me is how “complete” it feels for a starter, on-the-go microscope: a 3-inch screen, autofocus, rechargeable battery (I hate carrying batteries), built-in storage plus an SD card slot, and even a secondary magnifying glass. I also call out the practical side—at max zoom you’ve got to be basically right on the subject or it’ll get blurry, and anything that moves (like a live bug) is tough unless you’re steady. My takeaway: out of all the kids microscopes I’ve reviewed in the last 2.5 years, this is probably the best portable option so far. It’s inexpensive, super fun, and it’s a legit way to get kids interested in science before you jump to a “proper” microscope or even a telescope later on.
