DOOM 64 is METAL! Limited Run Games Unboxing

#doom #limitedrungames Feel like ringing in October by slaying some pseudo 3d demons? Join me for my unboxing of Limited Run Games Doom 64 Classic Edition! Doom has come in many forms over the years, from the frenetic pacing of its revolutionary 1993 debut, to its current heavy metal renaissance with Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. But there was another side of Doom that came to prominence in the late 90's and early 2000's. In that era, the franchise leaned heavily into horror, with the Playstation version of Doom giving us a creepy, atmospheric soundtrack, ambient lighting, and lots of echoey sound effects. But Playstation Doom was still mostly a port of the PC original. In 1997, we got something truly new with Doom 64 for the Nintendo 64. It featured all new sprites, a new weapon, and relatively complex event scripting for a 90's era Doom title. It even had thunder and lightning! The spooky atmosphere was dialed up to the max in this game, with some levels feeling like you're walking through a haunted house attraction at a theme park. I loved every minute of Doom 64, even the unnervingly quiet moments, where a lull in battle would give you time to appreciate the bleak expanse of outer space above you, or the disturbing random noises that could easily slip under your skin. It was great stuff. Limited Run Games has delivered a pretty compelling package here for folks who not only want a physical copy of Doom 64, but also a bunch of cool goodies that really celebrate this fantastic game, and its fantastic modern port. I'm very pleased with it! And a final statement: The Cyberdemon is one of the coolest enemies in gaming, ever.
