Jay Samit | Second Act Advantage: Rethinking Purpose, Work, and Lifelong Learning

Dean Seth Green of the Graham School at the University of Chicago hosts a conversation with international bestselling author and serial entrepreneur Jay Samit, former independent vice chairman of Deloitte Digital, about his new book Second Act Advantage. The book follows his earlier works Disrupt You and Future Proofing You. Jay opens with the context behind the book: the big five tech giants have laid off 1.2 million professionals in the past two years, AI is reshaping careers, and retirement itself is associated with a 53 percent higher mortality risk. He makes the case that older professionals hold advantages they often overlook, including a lifetime network, accumulated experience, and AI as a force multiplier that reduces the need for staff, outside capital, and paid software. He cites Kauffman Foundation research showing that venture-backed entrepreneurs over 50 are three times more likely to succeed than younger founders, and he and Seth discuss the role of fluid versus crystallized intelligence in explaining why younger founders dominate headlines while older founders more often reach success.
