About This Video

Resource guarding gets people really worked up—trainers, guardians, and especially shelters—because it can absolutely create dangerous moments and, historically, it’s been a fast track to euthanasia. In this video I break down what resource guarding actually is: a normal, natural survival behaviour. In the wild, protecting food and other essentials matters, so the goal in our homes isn’t to “dominate” it out of the dog—it’s to understand it, read it early, and manage it safely and humanely. I walk you through what guarding can look like in real life (stiff posture over an item, lowering the body as someone approaches, fleeing with the item, hiding it, rapid eating, growling and escalation). Then I cover how shelter handling of guarding evolved—from pre-1990s “any aggression = euthanasia,” to formal assessments like Sue Sternberg’s tools and Dr Emily Weiss’s SAFER test, and into today’s more nuanced, welfare-focused options. Finally, I share practical household management strategies like feeding separately, using crates/baby gates/ex-pens, and practising non-confrontational exchanges where you trade up with high-value treats. My key takeaway: even during behaviour modification, management is still crucial—be realistic about your household, and get help from a force-free behaviour professional.
