About This Video

When a friend visits and brings their dog, it can feel like everything explodes the moment your dog spots the “intruder.” In this video I explain why this specific kind of aggression happens (it’s often about the home and territory, not “bad manners”), and why the first question I ask is: how does your dog do with dogs outside the home? If your dog is generally okay elsewhere, we can often change the picture with visiting dogs by setting up multiple short, positive interactions instead of forcing an instant friendship. And if your dog struggles with dogs everywhere, sometimes the kindest, easiest solution is simply not doing in-home dog visits. I walk you through a step-by-step, force-free introduction plan: start in a neutral area outside the home, keep both dogs leashed with comfortable distance, and watch for relaxed body language and friendly interest. If things look good, you can progress to brief, relaxed parallel walks in your neighbourhood, then a calm sit together, and only then transition to the backyard (if you have one) or indoors with leashes and gradual freedom. I also share a simple targeting technique (from a book I link) that gives your dog a job—shifting them from stress to curiosity. Most importantly: it is okay for your dog to not be comfortable with visiting dogs. Some dogs genuinely prefer a quieter life with their humans, and respecting that preference is part of humane, learning-science-based training.
