You don't LOOK like a Blacksmith

Most people picture a blacksmith as a heavily tattooed mountain man with a giant beard, leather apron, and sparks flying in every direction. So, when viewers tell me, "You don't look like a blacksmith," it always makes me wonder—what exactly is a blacksmith supposed to look like? In this video, I work through a serpent-pattern mosaic Damascus billet for future folding knife builds while sharing my thoughts on where these stereotypes come from and why appearance has very little to do with craftsmanship. Along the way, I talk about the influence of television, social media, and personal branding, and why some of the most talented craftsmen I've ever known—including my father—never fit the image people expect. In the end, steel doesn't care what you look like. The forge doesn't care. The work speaks for itself.
