It’s been a minute since we bought anything from our old friends at Temu, so we went back for something that looked either like a scam or a hidden gem: a “$169 gaming laptop” with an Intel Pentium J3710, 8GB of DDR3, and a 256GB SATA M.2 SSD. The funniest part? Temu basically tried everything to make sure we didn’t get it. Our Toasty Bros account kept getting the order cancelled for “suspicious activity,” but the second we switched to a personal account and shipped it to the house, it shipped immediately. That alone was… interesting. Once it showed up, we unboxed it, checked ports (mini HDMI, 2x USB-A, micro SD), and confirmed it’s running Windows 10. It technically works and didn’t blue screen, but it’s painfully slow and sits at high CPU usage even when you’re not doing much. For “gaming,” we tried Roblox (barely playable), fought to get Minecraft running (we got it to a smoother ~30 FPS by dropping settings), and Pico Park ran fine. CS2? We gave it every chance—720p, launch options—and it basically hard-walled at 100% CPU/RAM. We also tore it down: passive cooling, soldered RAM, and basically no meaningful upgrades besides the SSD. Our verdict: thumbs up that it functions for $169, big thumbs down for Windows usability and “gaming” claims. We’re probably tossing Linux on it next to see if a distro can save it.
