Matt and I review a ton of keyboards on the channel, and we’ll be the first to admit we’re usually biased toward compact boards like TKL, 65%, and 60%. But you guys have been asking for more full-size options, so in this video I unbox and test the Epomaker RT98—a retro-inspired, full-size-ish 101-key layout board that’s doing some genuinely different stuff. The big hooks here are the modular design (you can swap which side the numpad is on) and the little “TV” TFT screen module you can pop on and customize. I go over the hardware basics like the tri-mode connectivity (2.4GHz dongle, USB-C, Bluetooth), the 800mAh battery, adjustable feet, and the included accessories. The RT98 comes with Epomaker’s Creamy Jade mechanical switches (hot-swappable), and we do a typing test so you can hear what it sounds like—honestly, it’s a really nice-sounding, easy-to-press linear. Then we actually do the modular swap, and I’ll keep it real: it’s cool, but it’s a bit of a process with screws and ribbon cables, so it’s not something I’d recommend doing daily. Software-wise, it’s VIA-based, but since our unit was pre-release we didn’t have the JSON file yet—however, the online screen tool worked, and I was able to load a GIF onto the display super easily. Overall, it’s a fun retro board with modern features, and if you’re building a sleeper-style setup, this thing fits the vibe.
