We got ourselves a chicken coop, and in this video I walk you through my super beginner, first-time homesteading setup that we put together for around $100. I’m only about one or two months into this, so yeah—there are flaws, and I’m learning as I go. I show the location I picked (under a big tree for shade and morning sun), how the chickens use the run during the day, and how I close them up at night so they’re safe. I also talk about what I’d do differently, like using stronger 1/4" hardware cloth instead of regular chicken wire (even though mine is triple layered right now). I also break down the little “mods” I did to make this coop work: repainting it, reinforcing weak spots, replacing wire, adding a simple locked door, and digging about a foot down to help protect the edges from predators. Then I show what I’m feeding and why—layer feed, scratch grains, mealworms for protein, crushed red pepper, kitchen scraps, and crushed eggshells for calcium. On top of that, I go over apple cider vinegar in the water and food-grade diatomaceous earth for mites/ticks and general chicken health.
