But what if some of your annuals just took care of themselves? In this video I'm sharing the annuals in my garden and in Kylene's garden that we planted once and have never had to plant again. These plants reseed themselves so readily that year after year they just show up — for free — without any work from us at all. Annuals that reseed themselves and act like perennials: Calendula — I planted maybe 10 plants once and now have hundreds all over my garden Dill — Kylene has it reseeding all over her garden without ever planting it Cilantro — same story, it just shows up every spring Lettuce — Kylene doesn't plant lettuce in her garden anymore Spinach — plant it once and you could have your own spinach patch for years Celery — readily reseeds in the right conditions Tomatoes — I even have volunteer tomatoes popping up this year from last season I'm also running a little experiment comparing my volunteer tomato plants to the ones I started indoors months ago. Subscribe so you don't miss the results! The secret to getting these plants to reseed? Sometimes it pays to be a little lazy. Let some of your plants bolt /let them go to seed and let nature do the work for you. You can even collect and spread the seeds yourself to get even more coverage — that's exactly what I did with my calendula. Gardening doesn't always have to be hard work.
