We planted 46 tomatoes and 77 peppers today — and we don't follow all the rules to do it. Today was one of our biggest gardening days of the year — getting all of our tomatoes and peppers into the ground and into their permanent summer home. And we do a few things a little differently than what most people will tell you to do. In this video my husband Rob and I are walking you through exactly how we planted 77 peppers and 46 tomatoes across our raised beds, including why we plant more densely than recommended, how we plant our tomatoes deep for better root development, and what we put in the bottom of each hole to give our plants the best possible start. I also brought in Kylene to share how she plants her tomatoes — because she does a few things differently than I do and her method is absolutely worth knowing about too. What we cover in this video: How we plant peppers densely and why it works for us Why we plant tomatoes deep and how to do it Worm castings in the planting hole for tomatoes How we use drip irrigation to guide plant placement Our string trellising system for growing tomatoes in a small space Why we love interplanting in our tomato beds Kylene's method — comfrey leaves, bone meal, gypsum, and nutra mulch compost We grow a lot of tomatoes and peppers because we preserve a lot — salsa, pasta sauce, pizza sauce, and more. If you want to grow enough to actually fill your pantry, this video is for you. We may break a few rules, but it helps us grow more food for our family. And at the end of the day that is what the Provident Gardener is all about. Shopping for quality hard-to-find specialty plants? Visit Wellspring Gardens.
