BEING REFUSED IRON TABLETS IN PREGNANCY DESPITE PREVIOUS HISTORY OF SEVERE ANAEMIA IN PREGNANCY

40 views· 3:24· Dec 13, 2025

Context to video- I had severe anaemia in my first pregnancy and my only symptom was vision disturbance which can be caused by retinal hypoxia due to severe anaemia. After birth my hb ws 6 and I was given a blood transfusion which treated the vision issue completely. During this pregnancy I have been proactive to try and prevent it happening again. I have had my hb checked 3 times at 9 weeks- 14.0, 22 weeks- 12.4 and again at 28 weeks, 11.2 Each time I have asked for my ferritin levels to be checked but have been refused due to the Scotland protocol they follow. This video is in response to my latest results which show my hb is dropping again, at this point in my first pregnancy it was 10.8 so very close to the 11.2 now. It suggests an anaemia diagnosis is likely but they are still refusing to check my ferritin levels or prescribe iron as their protocol states hb has to be 10.5 or below before they will check ferritin levels and prescribe iron tablets.
