What’s going on, guys? In this video I’m taking a look at the ORICO MixData Vault 8848U4, which is a 4-bay all-flash NVMe enclosure built around USB 4.0 (40Gbps). The whole point here is simple: storage prices are getting wild, so if you’ve got older Gen 3 or smaller NVMe drives sitting in a drawer, this is a really clean way to put them back to work without spending a ton on new flash. It’s an all-aluminum enclosure, it’s compact enough to palm, and it supports basically every common M.2 size (2230/2242/2260/2280) plus B/M key support. I also talk about the marketing vs reality on speed. That “40Gbps” is shared across the four bays, so you’re realistically looking at about 10Gbps per drive. In my testing I saw roughly ~800MB/s read/write on a Crucial P3 Plus Gen 4 drive, and similar results on Gen 3 drives—so don’t buy this expecting Gen 4 to feel night-and-day faster. My biggest complaints: there’s no RAID/software (it’s just drive 1, drive 2, etc.), the fan isn’t as quiet as I’d like, and I really wish it was bus-powered over USB-C/Thunderbolt instead of requiring that old-school power brick. Still, as a budget-friendly way to add up to 32TB and recycle old NVMe drives, it’s pretty decent.
