In this video I walk you through how to add external antenna leads to the T-Mobile G5AR gateway so you can run an external antenna and (hopefully) improve speed— but more importantly, improve signal strength and signal quality. I’m using Waveform QuadMini antennas for my setup, and while I’m not ready to drop a full review yet, my initial results have been really solid. I’ve been on T-Mobile Home Internet for about 2–3 years and it keeps getting better, and this is one of the best “next steps” if your signal is just not where you want it. I show you how to crack the G5AR open step-by-step: removing the bottom screws (and dealing with that very obvious warranty seal), popping off the front panel with plastic pry tools, pulling the internal frame and heatsink, and then swapping in eight antenna leads (0–7) that match the board labeling. I also explain why I label everything with tape, why I like sturdier TUOLINK-style leads, and why I cover the original internal leads with electrical tape as a precaution. Big takeaway: if you’re worried about returns or fees, I strongly recommend buying a second G5AR on eBay to mod, because T-Mobile can charge you north of $200 if they see tampering. Once the leads are seated properly, it’s just reversing the process and testing your signal afterward.
