I start with toddler ideas (books, puzzles, open-ended toys and a few “fun” bits), then move onto baby gifts that support movement, fine motor skills and sensory play. My overall approach is very Montessori-inspired: I try to avoid piles of disposable toys and choose things with long-lasting, open-ended play potential. I’m not completely against plastic (bath toys and a few character figures can be worth it), but I do avoid big plastic items that get broken and don’t get used. I also buy the gifts first and then let grandparents/friends choose from that list—especially now I’ve got four children—so we don’t overspend or end up with thousands of toys.
