In this video I’m bringing you behind the scenes at my child-led sensory play groups, The Way We Play, here in Cork, Ireland. We’ve been running just over a year, and I wanted to show you what a real set-up looks like on the day—today’s theme is our Christmas “Winter Wonderland”. What makes our sessions different is that I’m not asking little ones to sit for ages or follow adult-led instructions. Instead, the children come in for an hour and move around freely, choosing the activities in whatever order suits them. I always plan around a simple question: what are the children actually doing or learning? Pretty trays might look lovely on Pinterest, but if there’s no purpose, children lose interest quickly. In Winter Wonderland I set up six familiar, engaging stations—decorating a Christmas tree (with pipe-cleaner loops to make it accessible), a “winter soup” water tray with scoops and sieves, North Pole small world play, snowball scooping and transporting (great for rotation and containment schemas), a taste-safe hot chocolate sensory tray, and a snowman-building fine motor activity using bottles and tongs. Throughout the session I’m constantly resetting stations so every child gets the full experience.
