My Exfoliating Soap Recipe: 7% Super fat Coconut Oil 5.60 oz Palm Oil 6.40 oz Olive Oil 4.00 oz Distilled water 6.08 oz Lye 2.30 oz Titanium Dioxide 2 tsp (for white soap) Menthol crystals .25 oz Walnut shell powder 1/2 to 1 tsp Pink jojoba beads 1/2 tsp Vitamin E 2 beads Peppermint essential oil .5 oz 1 tsp colorant (optional) *The hot process blended to trace a lot faster than normal and took less time in the crock pot too, around 20 minutes. (Normally, it would take around 45 to 55 minutes.) *Make sure that you pour the lye into the distilled water. You should never add liquid to the lye. *Wear goggles and gloves any time you are handling lye or soap before it tests non-caustic. Lye can be very dangerous for your skin and could blind you if you get it in your eyes. Hot Process Directions: Step 1: Weigh oils Place them in crock pot on Low setting. Melt the oils and then turn the crock pot off. Step 2: Weigh the lye (Make sure you are wearing your goggles and gloves. Measure distilled water. Take the measured water and the measured lye and slowly pour the lye into the liquid while stirring. (Make sure you are either outside or in a well ventilated area to mix the lye in the water. Use a slotted spoon to stir. Step 3: Add menthol crystals to the oil in crock pot. Stir until they are completely melted. (Your oils must be at least 120° F in order for them to melt properly) Step 4: (If you want to add Titanium Dioxide, add it to the lye water now.) Slowly pour the lye mixture into the crockpot where the oils have melted. Stir briefly with a spoon and then mix with a stick blender. (Make sure you turn the stick blender off and on a lot so that you don't burn out your blender.) It will take about 4 to 6 minutes to bring it to trace with this recipe. (Trace is when you can see a line left in the mixture when you move the blender or spoon across the top of the mixture.) Your trace will look similar to pudding when it's ready. Step 4: Turn your crockpot on low and place the lid on the pot. The soap will gradually start to look waxy. The edges will look dryer. Stir frequently. It will look like waxy mashed potatoes when done. Test your soap with a ph test strip. It needs to be between 7 and 10. Preferably under 10. It took about 20 minutes to cook this recipe in the crockpot. Step 5: Add walnut shell and jojoba beads now. If you want to add Vitamin E you can add it now too. Add your fragrance. Mix everything together. Pour into molds. Allow soap to sit in molds for a few hours. Spray with 98% alcohol. Allow to cure for at least a week. The longer you allow the soap to cure the harder it will become and will last longer in the shower. Cold Process Directions: Measure your oils. Heat oils in microwave at 20 to 30 second bursts to bring oil temp up to 120° F. Add menthol crystals to heated oil and stir until crystals are completely dissolved. Measure distilled water. Measure lye. *Add lye to the liquid in a well ventilated area. (Always add lye to the liquid!) Add titanium dioxide to the lye water and carefully blend together. Add lye water to the oils by pouring down the shaft of the stick blender to avoid bubbles. Blend to a thin trace. Stir in walnut shell powder and jojoba beads. Add fragrance oil. Pour soup mixture into molds. Allow soap to sit in molds for 24 to 48 hours. After 24 to 48 hours, remove soap from molds and spray with 98% rubbing alcohol to help avoid soda ash. Allow soap to cure for 6 to 8 weeks. Music by YouTube Audio Library.
