Easy Homemade Suet Cake Recipe for Wild Birds

In this second suet cake recipe, I’m showing you another simple way to make homemade suet cakes that backyard birds truly enjoy. Making your own suet is an easy way to provide high-energy food for woodpeckers, cardinals, chickadees, and other wild birds—especially during colder months when they need extra fuel. Homemade Suet Cake for Birds Ingredients: 1 cup lard or suet (I used rendered beef fat) 1 cup peanut butter (I use homemade unsalted) 2 cups birdseed mix 1 cup cornmeal (helps with digestion) ½ cup flour (helps bind everything together) 2 cups of bird seed *You can add dried fruit if you like. Instructions: Melt the suet (rendered beef fat) and peanut butter together over low heat in a saucepan until fully combined. Stir well. Remove from heat and mix in the cornmeal, flour, and birdseed until everything is evenly coated. If using dried fruit, stir it in at this stage. Pour the mixture into molds (muffin tins, small plastic containers, or suet cake molds). I use suet cake molds from bought suet cakes. Place the molds in the refrigerator or freezer to harden. Once solid, pop them out and store in the fridge or freezer until ready to use. Hang or place in a suet feeder, and enjoy watching the birds feast! This suet cake is great for woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, blue jays, and other suet-loving birds. Enjoy your bird watching!
