Welcome to Deefer Diving's new YouTube channel, D for Diving. We wanted to have another look at BCD choices again this week. Specifically we wanted to explore the emergence in popularity of the back plate and wing configuration. On platforms like Youtube, there are a great many video's which highlight the equipment and show WHAT the configuration looks like and HOW is might fit together. I wanted to focus on WHY one might consider this set up as an alternative to a familiar jacket style BCD like the ScubaPro Go or a back-inflate wing style, like the Zeagle Ranger. I borrowed a BP/W rig and committed to dive with it for 20 dives. I had always said I had no interest in trying this type of setup. Why? Because I knew it was going to be uncomfortable, heavy and impractical for the majority of the diving I did here in Carriacou. After 6 dives, I could see some of the benefits of the system, but it WAS uncomfortable. Then I took the time to think about my diving and how the rig felt in the water. Over the next 5 or 6 dives I then started to adjust the rig so that it fitted ME. This meant that it was MY rig..... and became awesome! I'm a real fan now and use the BP/W as my daily diving rig. The version I use has a steel 3mm backplate and 40lb donut wing and a DiveRite TransPac harness. I'll make a DISCLAIMER now. I do not believe that there is a PERFECT SCUBA DIVING SETUP, and believe now that the choices are about which setup has the least compromises for you as an individual for the type of diving you're doing. At the moment, the BP/W has the least compromises for me, except for when I am teaching/demonstrating skills. What has your experience been of switching to BP/W or are you, like I was, someone liking the comfort and familiarity of you existing rig? Drop your comments in the section below.
