Welcome to Deefer Diving's new YouTube channel, D for Diving. In this video we are taking a closer look at the Flying Gurnard. The Flying Gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans) is a beautiful, unusual looking fish, frequently seen around anchorages in this part of the Caribbean. When on the move they open their blue-edged pectoral fins like "wings" in a wonderful display that is meant to deter potential predators. They are not like the silvery flying fish you see skipping along the surface (that's usually the Mirrorwing Flying Fish, Hirundichtys speculiger). The Fying Gurnard is heavier-set, and is usually found on the bottom in sand and sea grass areas. The name "gurnard" derives from the French, "to grunt", and refers to the sound the gurnard can make when threatened or annoyed. Did you know that Flying Gurnards can grow up to a whopping 20 inches in length? Their displays entertain divers & snorkellers alike, and make them some of our favourite creatures to see underwater! - Deefer Diving are a full service dive operation in Carriacou, Grenada.
