About This Video

What’s going on cryptocurrency Universe—it's The Bitcoin Miner here. In this one I’m in my crypto dungeon tearing into the Orange Pi 5 / 5B Ice Cooler. I love how this cooler looks, but out of the box it just doesn’t perform like it should. The gap is huge with the stock setup, and those little thermal pads and spacers weren’t cutting it for me. I started by bending the bracket prongs down to get more pressure toward the CPU, and that alone got me to around a 65c average—but I wasn’t happy with how close the metal was getting to the board and I knew we could do better. So I tested copper shims and showed you exactly how I stacked them and oriented them (smooth side to the CPU, sharp side to the cooler). I also used a trick: thermal glue around the edges to hold things in place, and thermal paste for the actual heat transfer since it’s way more conductive. I ran two tests—double-stacked shims vs a single shim—and the clear winner for me was the single 20x20mm copper shim with the bracket bent down. That setup dropped temps all the way to 42c while hashing, and it’s a massive improvement over stock. The only real question left is long-term spring tension on those brackets, so I’ll be keeping an eye on it.
