About This Video

What’s going on cryptocurrency universe, it’s The Bitcoin Miner here. In this video I break down the real-world options for storing Chia plots for farming/mining, and why I decided to go with external USB hard drives instead of stuffing a traditional PC case full of internals. Yeah, you can run a big case with anywhere from 2 to 10 drives (and I’ve even seen 20), but once you start scaling, you’ve got to think about vibration, how sturdy the case is, and the fact that mechanical drives have a life expectancy. The plots might last 5–10 years, but drives can start dropping off way sooner if you’re not careful. I show my simple deployment: a Sabrent 16-port USB 3.0 hub feeding a shelf setup where the drives are spaced out, stable, and cooled with fans. One cable to the computer runs 16 drives, and on Windows you’re basically capped at 24 drives total (23 usable after your OS drive). I also cover a key maintenance tip: set your drives to “always on” so they’re not spinning up and down constantly—spin cycles will absolutely destroy drive life when you’re farming 24/7. Bottom line: USB externals are cheaper, fast to deploy, and get you farming quickly, and you can scale into Linux, JBOD/J-boxes, or more industrial setups later when it makes sense.
