What’s going on cryptocurrency universe—this is The Bitcoin Miner. In this 2023 update, I finally made it back over to “Kyle’s dungeon” at my dad’s place to show you where we’re at with the 350 cell phone mining farm. This setup has been a constant work in progress for about two years (closer to two and a half), and the big takeaway is simple: if you’re going to run phones long-term, hard wiring is the way to go. We bought a lot of these used off eBay with cracked or missing screens, and they did great for about a year to a year and a half—but after that, batteries start bloating on most of them and it becomes a maintenance nightmare unless you convert them. I walk through the server-box style build where we’re running roughly 48–50 phones per 4U box on a dedicated 350W power supply, feeding a main rail and then distributing out to smaller rails. Kyle also wrote custom management software that lets us monitor each box by tab, see which phones are connected, and track hashrate—around ~4.14 MH average per phone after a restart, with some phones hitting ~5 MH depending on model. I also compare phones vs Orange Pi/Raspberry-style SBCs: phones are cheaper (I averaged about $27), but they’re more work and don’t auto-restart after power loss unless you build around it (UPS helps).
