In this live stream I break down what might be the smartest (or dumbest) tech move I’ve made in a while: I traded in my specced-out 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro (6-core i7, 32GB RAM, upgraded graphics—well over $3K back then) and replaced it with a 2020 MacBook Air with Apple’s M1 chip. After looking at benchmarks and, more importantly, real-world Final Cut Pro editing tests, it was pretty clear the M1 Air is punching way above its price—like, beating machines on Apple’s store that cost four grand, which still doesn’t compute in my head. I walk through Apple’s trade-in process (fast and seamless), the numbers (about $1100 trade-in value, and I paid roughly $150 difference), and why I chose the upgraded M1 model with the extra GPU core plus more storage. I also talk battery life (barely drops during a long restore), the improved keyboard feel versus the butterfly keyboard era, and the reality of living with only two USB‑C ports (dongles/hubs are basically mandatory). For my channel, this matters because I’m editing reviews—fitness wearables, gym tech, and creator gear—constantly, and I wanted the best real-world performance per dollar.
