About This Video

AI is here to stay, so in this video I break down what I genuinely think it’ll take to be a strong software engineer over the next 5 years. The biggest shift is that tools like ChatGPT (and Copilot-style assistants) are basically the next “IDE moment.” I remember going from terminal-only workflows to a real editor, then to IntelliJ with autocomplete and code search—and that jump in efficiency was massive. AI coding tools are the same kind of leverage. If you refuse to use them, it’s going to feel like choosing to code without an IDE. But being “good” in the age of AI isn’t just about generating code faster. Communication and documentation matter more than ever—because when the heavy lifting is easier, what sets you apart is how well you explain decisions, align with PM/UX, and build trust with your team. I also talk about continuous learning and picking things up fast (teams will expect it), choosing relevant languages that won’t disappear, and pacing yourself to avoid burnout. Big tech pressure is real, projects don’t stop, and if you burn out you can lose your performance—and sometimes your job. Future-proofing is using the tools, staying adaptable, and protecting your long-term health.
