The truth is, when someone is skimming your resume, they’re spending around 15 seconds on it. So my whole goal here is simple: don’t distract the interviewer—make it insanely easy for them to understand what you did, what you’re good at, and what role you fit. I go through the biggest issues: listing irrelevant experience (random part-time jobs, hobbies, clubs that don’t connect to the role), stuffing bullet points with buzzwords, and using internal code names or tools that nobody outside your company understands. Then I share what actually helps you stand out: quantify your impact (but don’t lie), keep it to one page for most entry-level candidates, and focus your technical skills list on what you truly know and want to use. I also talk about proofreading (yes, use tools like ChatGPT/Bard) and why tailoring keywords to a job description can help—especially with machine screening—without going overboard.
