In this video I’m comparing the two NAS operating systems I still use today: Unraid and TrueNAS (specifically TrueNAS SCALE / Community Edition). I first built a FreeNAS box nearly a decade ago, and my Unraid system is basically bang-on five years old, so this isn’t a “read the docs and guess” comparison—I’m talking from real, long-term use. I go through the history (FreeNAS → TrueNAS Core → TrueNAS SCALE/CE) and Unraid’s current licensing, then get into the stuff that actually matters when you’re storing data you care about. The biggest difference is storage. Unraid’s array is ridiculously flexible—mixed drive sizes, easy expansion, whole files living on single disks with parity for redundancy—but it’s not ZFS, so you need to take backups seriously. TrueNAS with ZFS is more rigid (vdevs, RAID-Z layouts, planning matters), but it brings strong data integrity features like scrubs, self-healing, and snapshots that can absolutely save your ass. I also talk UI, permissions (TrueNAS still catches me out), Docker apps on both, plugins on Unraid, and VMs. My takeaway: I’d recommend TrueNAS to home gamers for the ZFS protections, but Unraid has been my rock-solid workhorse that I’ve edited videos from for five years—and I wouldn’t change a thing.
