About This Video

Tech is the fastest-changing industry out there, and if you’re thinking about becoming a Network Engineer in 2025, you’ve got to be ready to keep learning—because what you learn today can be out of date in five years. In this video I break down what network admins and network engineers actually do, and the simplest difference I use: an admin maintains what’s already in place, and an engineer does that plus the design work—topology, routes, VLANs, IP ranges, and the strategic thinking behind how everything should connect. I walk through what “the network” really means in a company: public vs private networks, multi-office routing, DHCP, DNS, switches, patch panels, wireless access points, and the day-to-day reality of keeping ports up, monitoring performance, and staying on top of firmware and maintenance. I also get into modern needs like load balancing, links between offices and cloud (Azure/AWS), and designing redundancy so one failed link doesn’t take the business down. And yes—security matters: firewalls, allow/deny rules, avoiding “any-any,” and using a DMZ to expose only what needs to be exposed. To wrap it up, I share the cert path I recommend: start with CompTIA for fundamentals, then go CCNA/CCNP—even if you’re not running Cisco—plus vendor/cloud networking certs as you specialize.
