In this video I break down what a NAS is (network attached storage) and why it’s way more than just a place to dump files. Yeah, the main job is central storage for your home or business—everything in one spot instead of USB sticks and random folders everywhere. But the real value is the extra functionality most people ignore, especially on the big NAS brands that come with an app store where you can install services “out of the box.” I count down my top five NAS features. I start with hosting a website (like WordPress) directly on the NAS, including the basics of static IPs and port forwarding (ports 80/443) so the internet can reach your box—just be smart about security. Then I cover turning your NAS into a private cloud (your own Dropbox/Google Drive), using it as a real backup solution (and why you must keep backups offsite), and running a VPN server (I’m a big fan of OpenVPN) so you can securely access your home network from anywhere. My number one is virtualization: your NAS is still a computer, so you can run Windows and Linux VMs—just remember the VMs will “suck a little bit of juice” from the NAS resources. I also throw in bonus ideas like email, Home Assistant, surveillance, and Plex media server.
