So these are the things that I do on a regular basis to make sure that my NAS is running the best all the time. In this video I walk through practical, monthly “tweaks” that are really just good maintenance habits: checking your activity monitor so you can see what’s hammering CPU, memory, and network; reviewing logs when things feel off; and setting up widgets/notifications so you’re not flying blind. The big idea is simple—your NAS slows down over time just like a PC, and you need visibility into what’s actually consuming resources so you can shut down, uninstall, or reassess the apps causing the pain. Then I get into storage health: disks, storage pools, RAID, SSD cache, SMART tests (quick and extended), temperatures, bad sectors—the stuff that quietly turns into performance issues or straight-up failure if you ignore it. I also talk updates (OS and apps): don’t be scared of them, but don’t blindly auto-update either—read what the update does, because sometimes you can’t downgrade. And yeah, you knew this one was coming: backups and cybersecurity. I’m big on backups because I’ve seen too many people ask for deleted data back with zero recovery plan. Lock your NAS down—strong passwords, MFA, turn off protocols you don’t need (SSH/FTP), limit access, configure the firewall, and think about physical security too.
